Amanda’s Choice

College Adult |
Although many patients who acquire Alzheimer’s disease are over the age of sixty-five, this film looks at a rare form of the disease occurring in a very small percentage of Alzheimer’s cases: early onset Alzheimer’s.
As the story unfolds, Amanda witnesses the rapid decline of her mother, Susan, who is only thirty-nine years old. In addition to finishing high school and caring for her three-year old son, Amanda must now help look after her mother.
Within Amanda's family, her mother's case is not rare. Many of Amanda’s relatives suffered from Alzheimer’s, and her Aunt Connie also developed the diseases in her thirties. Fearing she could meet the same fate within the next twenty years, Amanda faces the gut-wrenching and suspenseful decision of whether to undergo a genetic test that can conclusively predict her destiny.
The documentary also explores new treatments and preventive measures which may offer hope for Alzheimer’s patients in the future.
