Filmed in the heart of western Papua, Asmat introduces viewers to one of the world’s most secluded people. The Asmat are feared headhunters, also renowned for their brilliant wood sculptures. Protected to the north by mountains and to the south by the Arafura Sea, their land has long remained free of outsiders. Explorers have been discouraged by the Asmat’s terrifying reputation as cannibals and headhunters. The film follow Rufinus, a 20-year-old Asmat, who must perform an ancient ritual —capturing and killing a cassowary, the great solitary bird that lives in the depths of the jungle—before he can be married.
