After 65 years of living in silence, couple Paul and Sally Taylor decide to undergo cochlear implant surgery to gain access into an unfamiliar world—that of sound. In this personal memoir, the filmmaker documents her deaf parents’ complex decision to undergo this risky and controversial medical procedure. As the pair embarks on an extraordinary journey from silence to sound, how will they react to their new audial world?

The film demonstrates the profound loneliness the two subjects associate with their lack of hearing. As they begin to experience the world of sound for the first time, their emotions spill forth to reveal a pair of extraordinarily lovable people. However, the experience also opens old wounds and feelings of having lived a life apart from their peers. In the engrossing historical footage from training films created by the Central Institute for the Deaf, viewers see the school where Paul and Sally met as children, in which teachers instruct students in "The Oral Method" of learning how to speak and pronounce English.
