This series on contemporary China is filmed from an insiders point of view and portrays daily life in one of the nation's busiest and most iconic cities. The three episodes provide a window into China today, giving viewers an opportunity to assess the similarities and differences between China and other cultures. .

It is the first day of school in grade four of the Shanghai Experimental Primary School. The film follows the children through the semester as they learn, misbehave, flirt, play, and take exams under their teacher's watchful eye.

The focus is on three children, including Gu, a smart boy but a showoff, who is often in trouble for fighting and is teased by his classmates for crying when he is ignored.

The pupils’ disregard for the cameras grants viewers an undisturbed, authentic window into China’s educational system—one where the whole class loses points when some children perform poorly, where great attention is paid to each individual child and discipline is the key to success.
