This inspiring film tells the story of a poetry, painting, and photography workshop and its profound impact on three people deemed by the criminal justice system “not guilty by reason of insanity.” Relegated to the former maximum-security wing of a Washington, DC historic hospital, patients Ronnie, Pam, and Kevin are selected by a social worker named Ed Washington to participate in the new program: Lens, Pens, Brushes, & Friends.
Washington’s intent for the workshop is to bridge the divide between this treatment population and the outside community. Lens & Pens is framed by Washington’s recollections of the program’s evolution, and interlaced with interviews of the students and their volunteer-teachers, as well as the resulting artwork. Public exhibits, performances, and art sales help foster substantial leaps in artistic skill and self-confidence, enabling Ronnie, Pam, and Kevin to grow toward their fullest potential. But how will they balance their new-found abilities with their uncertain futures?
