This film investigates the causes of depression and the variety of treatments available. Drs. Stancer and Weltcamp present their research on the inheritance pattern of HLA genes. We are shown how a PET scanner diagnoses specific forms of mental illness
Chemical treatments and electro-convulsive therapy (or shock treatment) are also shown. This latter technique has been refined and produces dramatic improvement in some patients. Psychotherapy is another tool for combating depression. We see a youngster in therapy and learn about childhood depression. New therapies such as "cognitive therapy," developed by Dr. Beck, correct a patient's bleak perspective of his world.
