A Global Perspective
| Released: | 1991 |
| Ages: |
High School College Adult |
This brilliantly conceived series investigates innovative solutions to prevent worldwide ecological disaster. Based on a five-year study, "Energy for a Sustainable World", carried out by scientists from the U.S., Sweden, Brazil, and India, it reflects a radical approach to energy conservation. It concludes that the West could reduce energy consumption by 50% by the year 2030, while still retaining present standards of living.
The films in this series, which are also available individually, are:
Changing the Way the World Works concentrates on the "end-use philosophy." Instead of asking how much energy the world will demand, it asks how can less energy be used to give consumers the things they want - lighting, central heating, air conditioning, automobiles, etc.
The Rich Get Richer focuses on tough, innovative laws and fresh initiatives world-wide which are helping to contain energy consumption and pollution. We see a computerized energy-management system in a home and in a high-efficiency office building.
Power to the People focuses on the developing world where the energy debate is carried on against a background of grinding poverty, limited resources and rapidly growing population. Among the affordable solutions demonstrated are more efficient stoves and faster growing trees.
