This information-packed program explores the possible origins of autism and the therapies developed for treatment. It introduces us to a broad spectrum of professionals - child development experts, psychotherapists, teachers, and researchers - who have differing views on this mysterious disorder.

The basic puzzle is whether the erratic behavior of the autistic child is caused by organic or environmental factors. Bronwin Hocking, mother of an eleven-year-old autistic son, and author of "Little Boy Lost," has been pursuing answers to her son's disorder for the last eight years. She feels her son retreated behind the autistic "curtain" because he was unable to cope with the difficult emotional environment at home.

On the other hand, Dr. Tony Bailey thinks that autism has organic roots in the structure of the brain. He shows us a brain scan which reveals an abnormality in the cerebellum. Prof. Elizabeth Newsom of the Child Study Unit at Nottingham Hospital profiles the characteristics of autistic behavior.

The documentary shows us the four principal therapies for autistic children. Music therapy encourages dialogue and improves timing. Pointing and gesturing is taught to facilitate communication in children with poor verbal skills. Structured play teaches children developmental skills they missed. Holding is a controversial therapy in which mothers and caregivers aggressively establish contact with the child.

"While comments from psychologists and other authorities are included, it is the articulate, learned observations of Rene's mother that most interestingly illuminate the feelings of the parent of a disabled child." - Booklist
