Dr. Norman Geschwind of the Harvard Medical School introduces this fascinating film on hemispheric brain research. In most people, the left hemisphere processes information with an analytic time-dependent sequential strategy, facilitating the ability to read. The right hemisphere processes information with a holistic strategy, independent of time and order, facilitating the recognition of spatial, melodic and facial patterns.

Pioneers like Dr. Doreen Kimura demonstrate a variety of tests which pinpoint the exact geography of brain functions. A surgeon anesthetizes one hemisphere to determine what skills remain with the other awake half. Another technique measures the blood-flow pattern with radioactive tracers that monitor verbal activity.

Nadia, a six-year-old mentally retarded child, draws intricate three-dimensional figures. As Nadia is taught to speak, her drawing ability diminishes, indicating a conflict between the two processing modes in certain types of learning disorders.
