Between Black & White explores the impact society and history have on the perception of color in the United States, and questions whether race can be determined on face value. Are the categories of "black" and "white" still relevant in our evolving society?
Four men and women, each with a black and a white parent, are featured in this film. Each has been identified by society as being one race or the other, but rarely celebrated as being part of both. And each has his or her own definition of who and what they are.
The issues of personal and social identity are examined through interviews, family photos and contemporary footage. Several of the young people interviewed have gone on to prestigious careers where issues of race have played a part. Omar Wasow is executive director of Black Planet.com, an internet company that enables the community of the African diaspora to form meaningful business and personal relationships. He is also an internet analyst for WNBC. Danzy Senna, now a best selling novelist, explores in her book Caucasia the complexity of racial identity in an interracial family.
