Newborn: With Dr. Berry Brazelton

This handsomely photographed film documents the extraordinary capabilities of the newborn. It demonstrates the infant's readiness to face challenges, perceive its environment, and establish its individuality. Having begun to learn in the womb, the baby is particularly alert in the first few hours after birth - and is far from helpless.
Neonatal researchers Drs. Berry Brazelton, Lewis Lipsitt and Louis Sanders demonstrate the components of normal infant development and how these are measured. We see that the various reflexes used later for crawling, walking, and exploring are already present at birth.
The film goes beyond the strictly physical for it is a celebration of the wonder of new life and the "bonding" of mother and child.
