When Diana McGowin got hopelessly lost driving home, she knew something was terribly wrong. Because she was only fifty-two, the doctors did not suspect Alzheimer's . After three years of tests they concluded she had a rare form called "early onset" which can strike victims as early as their thirties.

This articulate, high-spirited woman is the first person to chronicle the onset of Alzheimer's. In her book, Living in the Labyrinth, she writes about her good days and her bad days and the effect of her illness on her children and her husband. Realizing there were others with the same problem, she formed the first early onset Alzheimer's support group. There she met Richard Badessa, formerly a professor of English who once had an encyclopedic memory. The two of them have become unlikely crusaders, pressing for research, affordable long-term care, and most of all, respect. Their friendship has helped them each feel less isolated.
