When the Bough Breaks follows three mothers and their troubled children, aged ten months to three years, through three months of therapy in Toronto. Two of the children have never slept through the night, and one child demonstrates a serious eating disorder, holding food in her mouth for up to three hours and refusing to swallow. The film chronicles the families pushed to the edge by their children’s difficult behaviors.

Through in-home footage and tapes of therapy sessions, the film provides a fascinating picture of the children’s behaviors and interactions with their parents. When the Bough Breaks illustrates that even before they can speak, children give out signals of disturbance, and without proper intervention, chaos can ensue.
