Hymn to Freedom: The History of Blacks in Canada
| Released: | 1998 |
| Ages: |
High School College Adult |
This engrossing series chronicles the black experience in Canada from their arrival as slaves in the seventeenth century to their current achievements. History books barely mention the immigration, hard work, idealism, abuse and eventual assimilation, but their stories have been kept alive in the spoken words and memories of African Canadians through the generations. Each program focuses on an influential family with a keen sense of oral history, in a different part of Canada. The families share important characteristics: they are close-knit with a strong work ethic, have abiding spiritual or religious values, and hold deeply the African tradition of the extended family support system which sustains them. For an understanding of the African Diaspora, this is essential viewing.
