American Dreaming: Atlantic City's Casino Gamble

Michael Penland, Producer/Director

American Dreaming traces the rise, the fall, and the current attempt to revitalize the famous resort, Atlantic City, with casino gambling.

In the firm belief that money flowing into the slot machines would trickle down to the city itself, legislation was passed to legalize casino gambling. But that was not to happen. Gambling profits strengthened only the casino industry, but not the small local businesses. Combining unique archival footage with powerful testimony from the embattled residents, the film raises questions using gambling as a panacea for urban problems.
