This
film focuses on a seemingly perfect family that was actually in deep distress.
Kathy, aged thirty, and her mother, Helen, each had a long struggle with alcoholism
triggered by the tensions caused by an unstable father. All four children in
this family had problems of self-esteem and difficulties in relating to one
another.
A tragedy involving one of the children was the turning point for the family. It became obvious that they needed professional help. The process of recovery is rarely quick or easy, but the program stresses that it begins with acknowledgment that the problem exists. As Kathy and Helen learned to face their painful feelings and to express anger constructively, they gained confidence. They began to value themselves by their own standards and their feelings of self-esteem soared.
Eminent psychologist Dr. H. Stephen Glenn points out that healthy self esteem enables one to make mistakes and not be diminished by life's challenges.
