Directed by Phil Katzman
No
family is immune to the birth of an abnormal child, nor is prepared for the
pain and helplessness of meeting such a challenge. Home, Heart, Hope
is a touching portrayal of the actual experiences of parents, siblings and
caregivers involved with the care of severely mentally retarded and physically
handicapped people.
The film compares the effects of institutionalization with the effects of living in small community residences. On-site interviews and observation reveal the progressive physical, mental and emotional deterioration of patients confined to a depersonalized, institutional environment. Conversely, a small community home offers a "family style of life," personalized care, education and recreational activities. These enhance the dignity, individuality and progress of each person. The staff is professionally trained to understand the importance of family, affection and participation to the well-being of these multiple-handicapped residents.
This film shows the benefits of "normalization." It will inspire family members, legislators, and agencies to support community-based residences.
