Prisoners of Childhood

Exploring the Inner Child

Produced and directed by Midge Mackenzie

Inspired by The Drama of The Gifted Child by psychoanalyst Dr. Alice Miller, this documentary film is the intimate and tender record of a personal journey by five actors as they explore childhood memory. Working with therapists, the actors engage the real life child they once were. Painfully they discover lost feelings that are now allowed to surface.

This intensive exploration of childhood memory and trauma in the drama workshop directed by Midge Mackenzie, was a critical phase in developing three original dramatic films: Brothers, Ruby and The Winner. Each drama explores a major theme of Miller's work: Narcissism, Childhood Abandonment, and Grandiosity versus Depression. These uniquely powerful and artistic productions received rave reviews when first released.
