A
San Francisco-based organization, Breakthrough, has worked with youthful offenders
since 1981. Its controversial therapy program is based on the principle "We
give them absolute boundaries and absolute love." The program confronts
young people with some of the toughest physical and emotional challenges of
their lives. Participation is voluntary. The ground rules are strictly enforced
- no drugs, no smoking, no drinking, no sweets. Everyone must be on time.
This documentary is an up close look at a rehabilitation program in England based on the San Francisco model. It shows shows how group therapy and physical challenges enable the young people to confront their fears. Many of the young people are in tears as stories about being rejected, unloved and abused are shared. For some of them carrying a lifetime's pain and anger, it is a chance to look hard at their future. For others, is is just too tough, and they drop out.
