Produced by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
In
our consumer society, we are constantly bombarded by imagery that promises our
lives will be enriched through the purchase of one product or another. Many
groups and individuals are questioning this consumption-driven definition of
values and identity.
In this film we meet several people who are part of a movement called Voluntary Simplicity. Jim Merkle was a high paid weapons designer ten years ago. After an epiphany, he simplified his life by moving to a rustic cabin, limiting his expenses to $5000 a year, and becoming an environmental activist. Sue Grouse has found life to be more satisfying after she gave up her car for the simplicity of a bicycle. Now she feels more aware of nature and its pleasures.
This short film can't help but provoke a re-examination of personal values and goals, while bringing attention to the larger social forces that dictate lifestyles.
